An Image that Speaks Volumes ( a personal project )

Personal projects are a great adventure that often lead us through the most unlikely of paths. Our intention in starting this project is to hone our skills and see where this particular path takes us. We would love it if you joined us on this adventure.

Our intention is for the images to do the talking. We believe a single moment captured forever in a photograph can speak volumes. These images require no words and at the same time, tell a whole story.

Every other month, we will choose a single image to share with you. These images will usually follow a theme. By seeing, we hope you hear our voices.

[2] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
Another one to add to the collection of  Rebekka’s “growing taller” series! :-)

04-impressions-blog-circle-07-11

[3] Meijendal Dunes, Scheveningen
The wind was rustling all the leaves that day.. it was beautiful.

03-impressions-blog-circle-07-11

[4] Meijendal Dunes, Scheveningen
Such a pretty view, I photograph it often! This is a place where I’ve stopped countless times to nurse Rebekka when she was a baby, with dog walkers and horse riders passing us by. (Somehow, Lea’s hunger always skipped this particular spot!) I remember those special times with Rebekka each time I walk by :-)

05-impressions-blog-circle-07-11

[5a] Meijendal Dunes, Scheveningen
I imagine the girls climbing up into the gnarled branches of this tree some day. I might even join them!

06-impressions-blog-circle-07-11[5b] Another view..
..because this pathway is beautiful and I couldn’t decide which one to share! ;-)

07-impressions-blog-circle-07-11

[6] World Chocolate Day
Did you know 7 July is World Chocolate Day?! Celebration includes the consumption of chocolate, of course, and what better excuse to try a new flavour! :-)

08-impressions-blog-circle-07-22

[7] Catching bubbles
Little cutie was concentrating SO hard on catching those bubbles!

09-impressions-blog-circle-07-24

[8] Summer toes
Nooooo.. it can’t be the end of Summer?!

Impressions from May & June : a personal project

01-impressions-blog-circle05-09

[1] Scheveningen Beach, North of the pier
A solo walk along the water’s edge is food for the soul. The waves lapping around my feet was lovely! Later that afternoon, I received a sunny photo of Belmont’s Blue Lagoon (Lancashire, UK) from my Dad, and then my brother sent one from Chorley (Lancashire, UK) too. This was the photo I then shared with them. We’d all enjoyed some time outdoors that day and it was lovely to share where we’d been in our group chat.

02-impressions-blog-circle05-12

[2] Scootin’
A new scooter for Lea! Her legs were too short to be able to sit on the seat so she sat on the frame (she still does that now even though her legs are long enough!) Too cute!

03-impressions-blog-circle05-14

[3] Hi
That little raised hand…. *swoon* !! Oh goodness, I am in love with the photos from a recent client’s maternity and newborn sessions.. absolutely cannot wait for her beautiful fine art album to arrive!!

04-impressions-blog-circle05-30

[4] Roadtrip to Sylt, Germany
This was a fun but quick stop for the girls on what turned out to be an 11-hour roadtrip through Germany. It was a much needed stretch of the legs – especially for Lea, who is constantly on the go. Time was slipping away fast though and with multiple stops and travel through rush hour traffic, we ended up only just making the last car-train to the island! What a relief to be on that last train! And really, the girls were amazing having spent an entire day in the car!

05-impressions-blog-circle06-02

[5] Tickle Tickle..
Happy times for the girls as they played with Tante Karin and Onkel Holger! We enjoyed a lovely bbq on this beautiful summer evening.

06-impressions-blog-circle06-15

[6] Caught!
Stealth mode fail. I was spotted! Rebekka was reading to Lea, and Lea was sitting very still on the sofa, quietly listening. It was a rare moment and a memory I wanted to keep. I was able to get a couple of photos of them completely unaware of my camera but as I made my way closer to the sofa, Lea totally busted me. At first, only her eyes moved to look at me. Suspicious of the big black thing I was hiding behind, she gave me her “what are you doing?” kind of look. Then, as I peered over my camera, she was quickly up and climbing off the sofa to run over to me. The fleeting moment of stillness and sweet sisterhood, gone. Of the photos I took, it’s this one where I was caught out that brings a smile to my face.

08-impressions-blog-circle06-29

[7] Lea and Eddy
As I looked back over the photos I’d taken in the last few months, this was a memory that made me linger. Lea was so attentive to Eddy on that day. Quietly chatting to him in her own little language, stroking him, and sitting on the bottom step to wait for him to do his ‘business’ on the loo. It’s a different story now. A few days ago I caught her wagging her finger at him and telling him “niet doen” as he reacted to her teasing with a quick swipe of his paw!

07-impressions-blog-circle07-18

[8] Freedom!
There’s no stopping her now! Rebekka’s so proud to be cycling on her own. And we’re proud parents too :-)

Impressions from March & April : a personal project

01-impressions-blog-circle-04-03

[1] Little hands and Duplo
I love watching Lea’s little hands work as she builds. It’s fascinating!

02-impressions-blog-circle-03-25

[2] Playing ‘can you find..’ with Papa
My 3 loves.. ok, 4. I love books too ;-)

03-impressions-blog-circle-03-02

[3] Noodles.
Quicker than you can say the word ‘noodles’, they’re are all gone. Honest. Blink and you’ll miss them. She’s had me looking under her chair and in her seat for them but no, her tummy is full! The first time Lea speedily polished off her plate I was in shock. This little lady has been the fussiest of little eaters.. till now. Ok. She is still fussy. But she is eating a whole lotta different foods these days! Yay!

06-impressions-blog-circle-03-10

[4] Welcome Baby
I was so excited to photograph this family who are also great friends of ours.. little Maeby was born in early March. I’ve cherished every opportunity for her sleepy snuggles and the chance to inhale her brand new baby scent since then. Look how tiny she is in her Papa’s arms. Sweet newborn bliss!

05-impressions-blog-circle-03-10

[5] Little details.
You’re going to have to wait for the full reveal. Maeby needs her own blog post ;-)

09-impressions-blog-circle-04-22

[6] Hungry Frogs
Whose frog is the hungriest of them all??

10-impressions-blog-circle-04-29

[6] Where there’s a will there’s a way.
I quietly observed Lea seek out her little yellow snack box from the cupboard. I wondered what she was up to since normally she empties this cupboard’s contents all over the kitchen floor. I watched as she pushed the stool to just the right spot. Then up she climbed to throw her snack box into the sink. Now she’s unstoppable with climbing on the stool to reach the counter. Growing so fast..!

14-impressions-blog-circle-04-23

[8] Party time!
Birthdays are magical and exciting for 4-year-olds! I love the wonder of it all. Four is fabulous! Shout out to Nermina at Perfect Pastry – thank you for the beautiful and delicious cake! :-)

Impressions from January & February : a personal project

01-02-impressions-blog-circle-02-06

[1] & [2] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
We’re still keeping up with our tradition of ‘growing taller’ photos with the pigs’ head! ;-) This was the first zoo trip where Lea was out of the pram and good grief, there was no stopping her! We were amazed at how much walking she did. Freedom! Keeping her in one spot proved challenging so this was the best we got of her near the pigs’ head!

03-impressions-blog-circle-02-15

[3] Eddy
Since the day we moved house, this is the spot where Eddy spends most of his time. Curled up on our bed.. ohhhh the life of a cat!

05-impressions-blog-circle-02-10

[4] Heave-ho!
Ha ha! I couldn’t stop laughing whilst taking this photo! We had a large parcel delivered and although it was very heavy, Lea was determined to push it along the floor. The fact she had been dressing up just prior and was still wearing a high-visibility vest certainly helped make this an amusing moment!

06-impressions-blog-circle-02-15

[5] Blue.
If you’ve been following my other personal project ‘an image that speaks volumes‘ you’ll remember that the last post had the theme ‘blue‘. I almost shared the image above but at the last minute, decided on something else. These blue shoes once belonged to me. They are lay on a blanket I was wrapped in at my Christening. Two meaningful items, from different moments in my childhood, that my Mum kept and saved. I don’t remember wearing those shoes and I wonder why she chose to keep them. They are too big to have been my first pair of shoes. What memories did they have for her? I will never know. But I will keep them too.

07-impressions-blog-circle-02-19

[6] When the littles get together
Times are changing. The big littles are starting school in the coming weeks and there’s now a gorgeous new baby in the group which means ‘Baby Lea’ has been bumped off her baby spot! These fun (almost-)weekly playdates are going to be different soon. Holding on to the memories..!

08-impressions-blog-circle-02-28

[7] Something is missing.. do you know what?
The tooth fairy paid Rebekka a visit in January.. her little front tooth that was chipped when she fell more than 2 years ago started to wobble. It wobbled a long long time. And then I got a call from the creche. It had fallen out while she was eating an apple. They were a bit shocked that Rebekka lost a tooth so soon! At first, I was a little bit sad that her characterful little chipped tooth was gone. Now though, I’m so used to the gap that it’s hard to think back to when her little chipped tooth was there!

Impressions from November & December : a personal project

Skipping over November, a month of sickness for all of us (I’m reminded by numerous photos of the girls snuggled up and sleeping), let’s enjoy December for this round of Impressions!

01-impressions-blog-circle-12-17

02-impressions-blog-circle-12-17

03-impressions-blog-circle-12-17

[1-3] Getting out of the ‘Funk’. Meijendal Dunes, Scheveningen
In the moments when I endure waves of sadness and grief, the extreme joy around me at this time of year can all too easily make those moments feel like a heavy weight sinking me to the ground. How to get out of the funk? For me, there are two fail-safe steps: 1. pick up my camera, and 2. head out into nature. It’s soothing for the soul. I feel lighter. I’m present. Funk officially kicked to the curb. :-)

04-impressions-blog-circle-12-14

[4] Joy
Looking at this photo, I can’t help but smile. I hear laughter! Who knew empty bottles could be so much fun! Kicking them here.. throwing them there.. <3

05-impressions-blog-circle-12-21

[5] Faces and letters
Mid-December, Rebekka started drawing faces.. a head, eyes, nose, mouth, with stick arms and stick legs. They’ve evolved a lot since then (now with eyelashes, and a belly, sometimes a skirt! – stay tuned, I might share an update in the next Impressions!) She’s started writing too. What began as squiggly lines, have become almost recognisable letters (bottom-middle is her name). She quickly favoured writing the letter ‘p’ and sometimes ‘a’. We thought she was on the way to spelling Papa, but no. ‘p’ is Mama. ‘p’ is Papa, ‘p’ is Bekka, ‘p’ is Lea. And it is still the same now. :-D

06-impressions-blog-circle-12-24

[6] Christmas Eve
As is traditional in Germany, presents are opened on Christmas Eve. So when the girls came home from the creche, they got to open presents from their German relatives. Rebekka went to bed repeatedly saying she must “sleep good” because Father Christmas was bringing more presents in the night. (Took a fair bit of explaining this year.. Sinterklaas, der Weihnachtsmann, and Father Christmas!! Rebekka is very much into Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet!)

07-impressions-blog-circle-12-25

[7] Christmas Morning
(Surprisingly, they both slept really well!) ..Father Christmas had been in the night while they were sleeping – Rebekka was very excited! – and we all opened the rest of our presents on Christmas Morning while still in our pyjamas (as is traditional for my side of the family). Oh, those tiny toes..!!

08-impressions-blog-circle-12-25

[8] Our Family, Christmas Day
All four of us together; the rarest of photos. Whether ‘selfies’ like this one (so quick and easy to do!), setting up the camera on a tripod, or booking a family photographer, we should really make family photos a habit. I have plenty of photos of the girls, now it’s time to get Mama and Papa in the photo with them. I’m embarking on a monthly series of family photos that we’ll enjoy looking back on at the end of the year, and also in many years from now. This is a must.

Impressions from September & October : a personal project

It’s time for another round of Impressions!

Here’s a few moments from September and October. And as usual.. it’s all about the girls ;-)

2-impressions-blog-circle-09-04

[1] Our Stairwell on the Hull-Rotterdam Ferry
We took the Stena Line ferry to the UK and they don’t have a stairwell! *gasp* Not to worry… we returned on our usual route with P&O Ferries and got our photo ;-)

impressions-blog-circle-10-10

[2] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
Our little girl is growing ever taller! blink blink

impressions-blog-circle-09-21

[3] Becoming friends, Lea & Eddy
These two are finally happy to be in each others company. Or should I say, Eddy hangs around a little longer these days. Lea has learned to stroke instead of pull his fur out, most times any way. Work in progress :-)

impressions-blog-circle-10-11

[4] Bike ride in the Meijendal Dunes
We bought a FollowMe coupling device to attach Rebekka’s bike to mine, and we LOVE it! Rebekka loves to cycle inline behind mama, and to go-go-go very fast! This was our second long trip out, all four of us. We cycled in the dunes to a lookout point on top of one of the taller sand dunes, the same place I cycled to the day before Lea was born. It was hard work for me and with shaking legs, I had to get off my bike and walk the last part to the top. Either my muscles have forgotten how to cycle up hills, or it could be because I was pulling a heavy load, or maybe a bit of both. Having little Lea on the back and pulling Rebekka on her bike certainly did not make my task easy at all! It was fun though!

impressions-blog-circle-10-19

[5] A visit from the Grandparents
My Dad and Denise came to visit for a weekend which meant Lea enjoyed an early birthday celebration!

impressions-blog-circle-10-21

[6] The Birthday Girl. Lea is ONE!
She is such a delight! Even now, I’m still a little in disbelief that she is one. The year went by so fast!!

impressions-blog-circle-10-26

[7] The bottle bag
Lea has a new trick up her sleeve… the same trick Rebekka had at about the same age. Emptying the bag of empty bottles and throwing them all around the room. Sigh.

impressions-blog-circle-10-31

[8] Halloween
This year we took a walk along the beach to the Kaizerstraat to see the halloween market (and the gouls hanging about)! In the evening, with a little help from Rebekka, we carved our pumpkin. You can see the result on Instagram!
