Their labour playlist filled the room with a wonderful Brazilian beat as bright sun rays streamed in through the windows. A bottle of red wine was opened and a glass poured for the father-to-be. Freshly cut gerberas and tulips were placed on the dining table and on windowsills, perfectly complimenting the sunny February afternoon.

This maternity session in The Hague has quickly become one of my favourites. The afternoon was so relaxed. It’s a privilege to witness the love and affection of a couple anticipating the arrival of their first baby; to capture it in photographs for them to treasure always is such a joy.

With the passing of time, photographs come to be a beautiful piece of your family history. One day, I imagine their son will look back with curiosity to see what his parents’ lives were like while they were awaiting his arrival. Perhaps one day far from now, these images will be discovered by a grandchild too.

If you’re expecting a baby this Spring and are ready to have this fleeting moment captured in photographs, drop me a line and we’ll make it happen!

With love,
Natalie xx

I love working with this family. They were anticipating the arrival of their second baby when we first met. Now they have welcomed their fourth.

Their home is a wonderful blend of cultures and heritage, changing and evolving over time. We include special items in their photos – a blanket, earrings, clothing, a train set – each piece with it’s own history and story to tell.

They inspire me with the beautiful way that everyone comes together – to play, to eat, to rest. They exude the perfect blend of chaos and calm.

I’m truly captivated by the way the children play and dance in front of my camera, all the while chatting in a language unknown to me. We speak together in actions and a simple mix of Dutch and German. They are happy and I feel their joy.

My heart is full.

These photos tell a piece of their family story, and I am grateful to capture it for them.

You can have memories like these too! Interested? Or ready to book? Send me a message, let’s make plans!

With love,
Natalie

Impressions from September & October : a personal project

Whilst selecting images for this month’s blog circle, it hit me. My girls are growing up. Fast. Woah!

My mama-heart made me choose only photos of them to share with you for this round of Impressions. These are memories I hold dear to my heart. Enjoy..

01-impressions-blog-circle-09-14

[1] Toes, and upside down reading.
Oh goodness, my heart flipped at seeing Lea studying our local newspaper. Those little pointed toes!! Swoon! My little dynamo doesn’t stay still for long but she sure stayed a while to enjoy the paper! If you look closely, you’ll see she appears to have the gift of reading upside down. What a clever little thing she is ;-)

02-impressions-blog-circle-10-19

[2] Scrunchy toes.
Honestly. Baby toes are the cutest. But these baby toes are getting bigger.. ohhh but they are still so cute!

[3] A visit from Flip de Beer (Flip the Bear)
Flip de Beer (from school) loves adventures and stays with a different family each weekend. It’s such a great concept, and we had a lot of fun when he came to stay with us. We took him on the new ferris wheel at the pier. Now whenever I’m driving to school via the beach (a diversion because of roadworks) and we see the ferris wheel, an excited voice from the back of the car shouts to look out of the window, “we went there with Flip de Beer”!!

[4] Lea is TWO!!
My baby is two. Where in the world have those two years gone?! Two! Really! As instructed by Rebekka, the girls stood on chairs for the singing of Happy Birthday in English and Dutch. Several renditions later (because it’s so exciting and they know all the words!), we also sang the German version.

Lea sings a lot, and loudly. Ever since her birthday I’ve been hearing random parts of the birthday songs. I love how she sings “to youuuu” :-) She does such a great “hoera”(hooray) for “hieperdepiep” too!

[5] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
It was a lovely autumnal day, and not too cold. Perfect for a visit to the zoo. Rebekka had a list of must-see animals so we had a good long walk in order to see them all.

[6] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
Both of them up to mischief..

[7] Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
Sisterly love.. Rebekka is the best big sister!

[8] Halloween preparations
This year’s pumpkin wasn’t so scary-looking. At Rebekka’s request, I carved hearts for eyes :-)

Impressions‘ is a creative project by an eclectic group of female photographers from around the globe. We aim to share the inspiration behind what we do through our bi-monthly posts.

Every other month, we will be sharing 8 images that tell the story of what inspired us in the previous weeks: our families, nature, weather, or maybe even work itself! We are free to explore the meaning of ‘impressions’, and it is likely to change month to month.

Say hello in the comments below and then hop on over to see what Antonina Mamzenko in London, UK,  is sharing this month :-) Then continue clicking through the circle till you make it back here – I hope you enjoy all our posts!

Hope for Nepal | Images to Inspire Hope

Images to Inspire Hope - Natalie Carstens & Vinita SalomeJust a few sentences in on an article written by the BBC and I’m already moved to tears.

More than 8 million people have been affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal, and the numbers are rising. That’s more than a quarter of the country’s population. It’s incredible to try and imagine it.

One million children are in urgent need of help.

Yesterday evening, I saw on CNN that a four month old baby boy was found alive after being buried under rubble for more than 22 hours. I’m so thankful to read that he’s been cleared of injuries and has been reunited with his parents. It touches my heart.

I think of this family whilst I’m breastfeeding my youngest in the night and under the weight of emotion I need to take a deep breath.

Whilst I cannot relate to their experiences, I see it in their eyes and feel deeply for all those affected by such tragedies. When I think of the children, and babies, my heart breaks for them.

Unquestionably, I am moved to action. Vinita too. Together we have launched a new project through our initiative, Images to Inspire Hope. We hope you will join us in bringing hope to the survivors in Nepal.

Please donate!

Our chosen fund is GIRO555 from De Stichting Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties (SHO). This organisation is a partnership of Dutch aid organisations including Oxfam, Save the Children, Unicef, Cordaid and Red Cross Netherlands.

giro555-nepal

Every little bit goes a long way to helping those in need. We urge you to donate.

You and your children could win a wonderful family photo session on-location in the heart of the Randstad (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht)!

For every 10 euros you donate to the GIRO555 fund for Nepal, you will be entered into a prize draw to win a wonderful family photo session with Vinita Salomé Photography and I, valued at 1000 euros! Increase your chance of winning; donate 100 euros and you’ll receive 10 entries!

The photo session will take place in the heart of the Randstad (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht) in the month of September 2015 – I’m currently on maternity leave, hence the later date.

Please see our project announcement ‘Hope for Nepal‘ for all the details. The closing date for the prize draw is 31 May 2015. The winner will be drawn at random and announced on 1 June 2015.

Make a difference, today.

We encourage you to share with your friends and networks, and are so grateful for your support.

With appreciation and love,
~Natalie and Vinita

Impressions from January & February : a personal project

It’s time for another round of Impressions! Here’s a few moments I want to remember from January and February..

03-impressions-blog-circle

[1] Lea, (12 weeks / almost 3 months)
That hair! I love it! I’ve been making a point of photographing Lea regularly, and I did the same with Rebekka. Her face is changing so quickly, it was quite special to go back (even only going back a couple of months) and see the difference. Her newborn look is totally gone now, and she’s becoming a real little person – and having her own little personality along with it! Just want to kiss those sweet cheeks of hers..!

02-impressions-blog-circle

[2] Morning light, The Hague skyline
The dark winter mornings are long gone now but this takes me right back to a really beautiful morning early in January. It was Rebekka’s first day of creche since the Christmas holidays. I had just gone into her bedroom to wake her up and these wonderful colours greeted me as I opened the curtains. Beautiful!

04-impressions-blog-circle-5

[3] Bedtime shenanigans! (Rebekka, age 2.5 and Lea, 13 weeks / almost 3 months)
The love between these two, it makes my mama-heart swell with pride! Whilst getting the girls ready for bed, i’d first change Lea and then place her in the cot and then get Rebekka ready for bed. No sooner had Rebekka got her pyjamas on, she was in the cot with Lea and full of giggles! Bedtime is much different these days (mostly Papa is getting Rebekka ready, and I’m feeding Lea in a darkened room), so this image is one to treasure for sure.

05-impressions-blog-circle-a

[4] Hi. Lea (16 weeks / almost 4 months)
You can tell she enjoys her milk, right? :-)

05-impressions-blog-circle

[5] Rebekka’s pine cone
This pine cone was one of Rebekka’s finds that made it’s way home with us. It’s been on our balcony for months and she’s always playing with it whenever she’s out there. Depending on the weather, sometimes it’s scales are open and sometimes they’re closed tight. I never knew till now that they still opened and closed after having fallen from the tree so long ago!

06-impressions-blog-circle

[6] Playdoh
Occasionally we have days where the rain keeps us inside, and whilst Lea naps in her room, I get to spend some quality time just me and Rebekka. The playdoh often makes an appearance during these times. I’m not such a fan of the stuff (it gets everywhere!) but she sure has a lot of fun with it!

07-impressions-blog-circle

[7] Scheveningen Pier, Scheveningen Beach
After a full-on day of working every minute that Lea napped, it was time to get out and let the fresh air blow away the cobwebs, so to speak. I love the sea. I love hearing the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the shore. This is my favourite place to ‘Be’.

08-impressions-blog-circle

[8] My view. Lea (18 weeks / 4 months)
Breastfeeding. I want to always remember this wonderful time together ♥. It took a few attempts to get a photo because Lea kept smiling at me and showing the goods, too cute that little smile of hers, I melt :-)

From 3 to 4; introducing Lea Renee | 10 days new

I’m absolutely delighted to share the news that our baby girl has arrived – and swiftly I might add! We made a hasty dash to the hospital and only just got there in time, and in the midst of Hurricane Gonzalo too! Lea’s birth was incredible and I’m so grateful for such an amazing experience, and for those that shared it with us.

We are totally overwhelmed with love, and big sister Rebekka is so sweet with her little sister – honestly, watching the two of them sometimes I feel my heart might burst!! Rebekka has grown up so much in these last couple of weeks, she’s amazing!

Two girls! We are a family of four! *LOVE*

We’ve been keeping little Lea all to ourselves and for our early visitors, and so many of you have been asking for photos (and for visits!) – well, here she is!

We’re getting close now! It’s October – that means it’s baby month for our family!

It’s time for me to enjoy my maternity leave, and relax. As we wait for baby, I thought it would be nice to share a small collection of photos from our maternity session with the very talented, Eline Visscher.
