Their labour playlist filled the room with a wonderful Brazilian beat as bright sun rays streamed in through the windows. A bottle of red wine was opened and a glass poured for the father-to-be. Freshly cut gerberas and tulips were placed on the dining table and on windowsills, perfectly complimenting the sunny February afternoon.

This maternity session in The Hague has quickly become one of my favourites. The afternoon was so relaxed. It’s a privilege to witness the love and affection of a couple anticipating the arrival of their first baby; to capture it in photographs for them to treasure always is such a joy.

With the passing of time, photographs come to be a beautiful piece of your family history. One day, I imagine their son will look back with curiosity to see what his parents’ lives were like while they were awaiting his arrival. Perhaps one day far from now, these images will be discovered by a grandchild too.

If you’re expecting a baby this Spring and are ready to have this fleeting moment captured in photographs, drop me a line and we’ll make it happen!

With love,
Natalie xx

I love working with this family. They were anticipating the arrival of their second baby when we first met. Now they have welcomed their fourth.

Their home is a wonderful blend of cultures and heritage, changing and evolving over time. We include special items in their photos – a blanket, earrings, clothing, a train set – each piece with it’s own history and story to tell.

They inspire me with the beautiful way that everyone comes together – to play, to eat, to rest. They exude the perfect blend of chaos and calm.

I’m truly captivated by the way the children play and dance in front of my camera, all the while chatting in a language unknown to me. We speak together in actions and a simple mix of Dutch and German. They are happy and I feel their joy.

My heart is full.

These photos tell a piece of their family story, and I am grateful to capture it for them.

You can have memories like these too! Interested? Or ready to book? Send me a message, let’s make plans!

With love,
Natalie

Impressions from January & February : a personal project

It’s time for another round of Impressions! Here’s a few moments I want to remember from January and February..

03-impressions-blog-circle

[1] Lea, (12 weeks / almost 3 months)
That hair! I love it! I’ve been making a point of photographing Lea regularly, and I did the same with Rebekka. Her face is changing so quickly, it was quite special to go back (even only going back a couple of months) and see the difference. Her newborn look is totally gone now, and she’s becoming a real little person – and having her own little personality along with it! Just want to kiss those sweet cheeks of hers..!

[2] Morning light, The Hague skyline
The dark winter mornings are long gone now but this takes me right back to a really beautiful morning early in January. It was Rebekka’s first day of creche since the Christmas holidays. I had just gone into her bedroom to wake her up and these wonderful colours greeted me as I opened the curtains. Beautiful!

[3] Bedtime shenanigans! (Rebekka, age 2.5 and Lea, 13 weeks / almost 3 months)
The love between these two, it makes my mama-heart swell with pride! Whilst getting the girls ready for bed, i’d first change Lea and then place her in the cot and then get Rebekka ready for bed. No sooner had Rebekka got her pyjamas on, she was in the cot with Lea and full of giggles! Bedtime is much different these days (mostly Papa is getting Rebekka ready, and I’m feeding Lea in a darkened room), so this image is one to treasure for sure.

[4] Hi. Lea (16 weeks / almost 4 months)
You can tell she enjoys her milk, right? :-)

05-impressions-blog-circle

[5] Rebekka’s pine cone
This pine cone was one of Rebekka’s finds that made it’s way home with us. It’s been on our balcony for months and she’s always playing with it whenever she’s out there. Depending on the weather, sometimes it’s scales are open and sometimes they’re closed tight. I never knew till now that they still opened and closed after having fallen from the tree so long ago!

06-impressions-blog-circle

[6] Playdoh
Occasionally we have days where the rain keeps us inside, and whilst Lea naps in her room, I get to spend some quality time just me and Rebekka. The playdoh often makes an appearance during these times. I’m not such a fan of the stuff (it gets everywhere!) but she sure has a lot of fun with it!

07-impressions-blog-circle

[7] Scheveningen Pier, Scheveningen Beach
After a full-on day of working every minute that Lea napped, it was time to get out and let the fresh air blow away the cobwebs, so to speak. I love the sea. I love hearing the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the shore. This is my favourite place to ‘Be’.

[8] My view. Lea (18 weeks / 4 months)
Breastfeeding. I want to always remember this wonderful time together ♥. It took a few attempts to get a photo because Lea kept smiling at me and showing the goods, too cute that little smile of hers, I melt :-)

‘Impressions‘ is a creative project by an eclectic group of female photographers from around the globe. We aim to share the inspiration behind what we do through our bi-monthly posts.

Every other month, we will be sharing 8 images that tell the story of what inspired us in the previous weeks: our families, nature, weather, or maybe even work itself! We are free to explore the meaning of ‘impressions’, and it is likely to change month to month.

Say hello in the comments below and then hop on over to see what Kim Rodgers of Brink Street Photography is sharing this month :-) Then continue clicking through the circle till you make it back here – there are six of us joining in this month, I hope you enjoy all our posts!

From 3 to 4; introducing Lea Renee | 10 days new

I’m absolutely delighted to share the news that our baby girl has arrived – and swiftly I might add! We made a hasty dash to the hospital and only just got there in time, and in the midst of Hurricane Gonzalo too! Lea’s birth was incredible and I’m so grateful for such an amazing experience, and for those that shared it with us.

We are totally overwhelmed with love, and big sister Rebekka is so sweet with her little sister – honestly, watching the two of them sometimes I feel my heart might burst!! Rebekka has grown up so much in these last couple of weeks, she’s amazing!

Two girls! We are a family of four! *LOVE*

We’ve been keeping little Lea all to ourselves and for our early visitors, and so many of you have been asking for photos (and for visits!) – well, here she is!

We’re getting close now! It’s October – that means it’s baby month for our family!

It’s time for me to enjoy my maternity leave, and relax. As we wait for baby, I thought it would be nice to share a small collection of photos from our maternity session with the very talented, Eline Visscher.

Impressions from May & June : a personal project

It’s time for another round of Impressions!

Impressions‘ is a creative project by an eclectic group of female photographers from around the globe. We aim to share the inspiration behind what we do through our monthly posts.

On the 8th of each month, we will be sharing 8 images that tell the story of what inspired us in the previous weeks: our families, nature, weather, or maybe even work itself! We are free to explore the meaning of ‘impressions’, and it is likely to change month to month.

For many reasons, it’s been a challenge to take personal photos, especially during the month of June. We’ve had travel and illness (horrible chicken pox!), all the extra appointments pregnancy brings, as well as several client photo sessions and the start of a second job for me!

I haven’t had chance to escape out for a walk with my camera for some ‘me-time’. Most personal photos I’ve taken over the last few weeks are simply from the iPhone – and the most recent ones are of a very spotty Rebekka (but I won’t be sharing those).

Here’s my selection and a quick recap of family life in May and June:

01-impressions-blog-circle

[1] Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam
This was my first ever trip away from Rebekka. I’ve been away from her for long periods before, although it’s usually been overnight (because that’s when babies like to be born). But leaving to go to work, even when the number of hours i’ll be away is unknown, is very different.

Saying goodbye to a tearful Rebekka (who’d come to wave goodbye to me at the train station), getting on a train, heading to the airport, getting on a plane, and being gone for a whole weekend – leaving was harder than I thought it would be. It was as though an invisible thread tying us together was stretched out and cut into two separate pieces. Rebekka was fine of course; she had Papa all to herself for the weekend. And on landing at the airport at the other side, the sad feelings I had were soon replaced with excitement about the reason for my travels.

But it was hard… I missed seeing Rebekka on Mother’s Day, and it was even harder still because Rebekka became ill with fever that weekend. Though because she was ill, she was still awake when I returned home late on the Sunday night and so I still got my Mother’s Day kiss :-)

02-impressions-blog-circle

[2] “Apple”.
My favourite little person had been asking for an apple all day. “apple.. apple.. apple” over and over. But we didn’t have chance to go to the shops till late-afternoon. Rebekka was absolutely delighted to finally get her hands on an apple and I love the content little grin she had after her first bite.

03-impressions-blog-circle

[3] Baking cookies.
Shaping crumbly cookie dough into cookies wasn’t so easy for little hands – unless you want crumb-sized cookies that is. Rolling out the dough, cutting out shapes and decorating them with icing and sweets is much more fun (and something I loved to do with my Grandma when I was little). We need a different recipe for next time. More fun and more mess is definitely required – we stayed far too clean for a baking session with a toddler! The chocolate chip cookies tasted good though ;-)

04-impressions-blog-circle

[4] A new bed for Rebekka.
We took a trip to Ikea so Rebekka could choose a big bed and a new duvet set. She was all excited watching Papa set it up for her and imitating him, she tried to help fix the screws into place. Turned out, she was much more interested in climbing and jumping on the bed than laying down and going to sleep. Once asleep she was fine and slept well, but getting her to lay down and stay in the bed was so hard.

After a good few nap times and nights struggling we gave up and brought the cot back into her room, and all three of us were able to enjoy a blissful night of sleep. We will try again another time soon, hopefully next time will be much more successful!

05-impressions-blog-circle

[5] Introducing Monkey to Monkey. Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam.
Mr Rabbit is still a clear favourite, but Rebekka has recently taken to another cuddly toy – “Monkey”. Immediately after seeing the colobus monkeys in an enclosure at the zoo, Rebekka made a beeline to find her Monkey, excitedly holding him up to show him the monkeys in the enclosure, whilst also shouting “Monkey” (and in an adorable Northern English accent too! I’m proud!)

06-impressions-blog-circle

[6] My little fashionista.
Some days the cuteness factor goes into overload – this was one of those days ;-)

07-impressions-blog-circle

[7] Scheveningen Beach.
We went for lunch at the beach and Rebekka spent the whole time playing in the sand next to our table. Here, she is just getting started. By the time we returned home, half the beach had made it’s way home with us and a bath instead of nap time was very necessary!

08-impressions-blog-circle

[8] The moon.
Our view over the rooftops towards The Hague on a perfectly calm evening, just before sunset.

Please continue through the circle and see what Kim Rogers of Brink Street Photography is sharing this month :) Then continue clicking through the circle till you make it back here – I hope you enjoy all our posts!

Say hello in the comments below…
